BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD (September 30, 2019) – Community College of Baltimore County Dundalk Athletics today announced that it has named Matt Backert head baseball coach, replacing Jon Karsos who resigned in August.

"I am beyond excited and honored to lead the CCBC Dundalk baseball program as their next head coach."  Backert said.  "I want to thank Leslie Wray and Brian Farrell for giving me this great opportunity. I'm looking forward to building strong relationships with the surrounding community and helping our student-athletes succeed both on and off the field."

Backert was brought on the Dundalk staff as an assistant coach this fall after spending a year at CCBC Essex in the same capacity.  Prior to CCBC Essex, he was the head baseball coach at The John Carroll School (Bel Air, Md.) from 2014-2017. Backert spent 2018 coaching high-level club and travel teams.

He attended Rising Sun High School (North East, Md.), graduating in 2002, and was a middle infielder for the Tigers' 2000 Maryland State Championship baseball team.

Backert attended Neumann University (Ashton, Pa.) from 2002-2006 where he played soccer and baseball, earning various All-Conference and team honors in both sports, and earned a BA in Sport Management and Business Administration.

After graduating college, Backert spent seven years overseeing baseball operations for Ripken Baseball, including leading its instructional programs, such as camps and clinics.

From 2007-2010, he served as a Baseball Coach Ambassador for the U.S. State Department, a position that led him around the world, including China and Nicaragua, to facilitate camps and coaching clinics to teach baseball to youth and coaches.

He currently teaches Physical Education and Health at The Highlands School (Bel Air, Md.) by day, and is also a Certified Personal Trainer and Sports Performance Coach.

Backert resides in Bel Air, Md. with his wife Kelly and children Gabby and Gavin.
