Men's Basketball: Lions Top Spartans in Home Opener

DUNDALK, Md. -- The Lions soared by the North Hampton Spartans 66-47 on day one, game day of the 2016 CCBC Dundalk Men's Basketball Mixer at the CCBC Dundalk Wellness & Athletics Center.

Freshman forward Kyle Williams-Venable, in an all-around effort, helped the Lions maintain an early lead. He finished the game with 15 points and 17 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Donte Jafah-Winfield added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists.

The Lions (2-0) high-energy defense and three-point shooting led them to take control of the game early in the first half.

Spartan's coach Brennan McCarthy called a time out after Williams-Venable made a three pointer stretching the Lions lead to 19-5 with 12:38 left in the first half.

Coach McCarthy called his second time out of the first half after a layup by the Spartans' sophomore guard Juan Perez-Jones. His layup made the score 27-7 with 7:00 left in the first half.

The Spartans fought back into the game with 10 unanswered points to end the first half to make it 34-22 Lions at the break. 

The second half began with the same theme.

North Hampton's freshman forward Isiah Hinton-Gray made a layup after being fouled by a Lions defender. Hinton-Gray made a free-throw to bring the deficeit to nine.

The Lions first score came two minutes into the second half.

Spartans' freshman center Wayne Davy displayed his defensive presents with an impressive block on the Lions sophomore Robert Goodwin with 14:15 left in regulation.

Spartan's head coach McCarthy called the first time out of the second half with 11:35 remaining, as his team trailed by 11 points.

The Lions' Jafah-Winfield scored the next six point for the Lions, bringing the score to 50-33.

With 3:22 left in the game, the Lions secured a 20-point lead after a three Williams-Venable.

The Lions pushed the lead to 62-42 with 3:22 remaining and held on for a 66-47 victory.
